“The Library honors Black History Month by celebrating black authors and their stories. Why are books by black authors and stories featuring black characters important? Books can either be mirrors, allowing the reader to see themselves reflected in society or windows, allowing the reader to see what life is like for someone with other experiences.”

“If you’re anything like me, you often face a classic conundrum when it comes to how you’ll spend your time, asking: “Should I prioritize the important or the urgent?” And, ya know, if you’re like me, urgent matters often win. Gotta get the kids out the door, dinner on the table, work assignment turned in. Log a few hours of sleep, wake up, and repeat again tomorrow.
But then, dare I say it, if you’re like me, you wake up some of those mornings and think, “This isn’t how my life is supposed to look.”

Favorite Movie/TV show at this moment?
The new Top Gun movie is definitely my favorite at the moment. It takes me back to my childhood when the first Top Gun was released. I am watching all of the NCIS New Orleans series again. I love that type of show.
Favorite music group, genre, etc.?
I normally listen to contemporary Christian music. I do love Dolly Parton and Elton John.
Who is your hero?
My hero is my 4 year old great nephew Oliver. In his short life, this kid has been through so much. He was born 8 weeks premature with a condition called Vactoral syndrome. It’s a genetic defect that caused him to be born  with no esophagus, among other things. In the last 4 years, he has had 37 surgeries to correct many of the defects. By God’s grace, he is a healthy, happy, funny little boy. His resilience and spark for life just blow me away.  His mommy  and Daddy are pretty cool too. They are two of the strongest human beings I have ever met.
What is your career, and what’s your favorite thing about it?
My official title at work is Senior Director of Resident Engagements. In real world terms, that means that I oversee a department that does fun stuff with people who have Dementia. I work in an assisted living memory care community that helps those with Dementia and their families. My team plans and conducts the daily fun and activities for our residents. The best part of  my job is being able to give my residents the dignity and purpose that they deserve as they are living with Dementia.
What is your favorite book to read?
I am actually not much of a reader. I have struggled with Dyslexia since I was in high school and that makes it hard for me to read sometimes. Every year, I try to read at least one good book though. The one I am reading now is called “The unauthorized biography of Mrs’ Tom thumb.” It is loosely based on the life of Lavinia Thumb. She was the wife of the famous circus performer General Tom Thumb. I am a bit of a circus freak.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The national dish of Ethiopia, Dura Wat. I love it and try to eat it every chance that I can.
What are your hobbies?
I collect all kinds of circus/clown memorabilia. Then I turn those things into home furnishings and works of art. Daryl and I have a bull stand coffee table in our living room that we made. It holds some of my collection. A bull se elephants stand on in the circus. I also love to sing and paint.
If you were a superhero, what powers would you have?
I think I would like to have the power to travel at the speed of light. I love to travel, but I really don’t like planes and long road trips.
What song would you say best sums you up?
A million Dreams from The Greatest Showman. Being a circus freak, that is right up my alley. It was also the song that Daryl and I walked down the isle to at our wedding. I think it tells our story in a way that reflects us so well.
What celebrity would you like to meet at Starbucks for a cup of coffee?
I don’t actually drink coffee, so I would have to get one of their sweet drinks. As far as the person I would like to meet, it would have to be Lilly Tomlin. I have loved her since I was a kid. I just think she must have so much wisdom to pass along.
Why are you serving in youth ministry this year?
That’s a loaded question. First, because I was asked. I am so grateful to have been asked. Second, I have always had a heart for high school kids. I know how difficult that period in life was fro me. If I can let just one kid know that it really does get better, I feel very accomplished. I also think that these kids need to know how very important they are. With all of the negative in the  world, there have to be people telling them the good that life has to offer.
