Invitation to Romans

‘Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears’… there will be a New Fall Class on Romans!

When: Wednesday mornings, 9:30 to 11:30

How Long: 10 week study starting August 29th

Place: portable B

Needed: Study Book & Study Bible

How: Enroll by August 14th (ronald.miller1333ATsbcglobal.net)

Paul’s letter to the Romans is the most commanding exposition of the gospel of salvation by grace through faith ever written. It stands first among the New Testament epistles (letters which are arranged in order of decreasing length) because it is the longest of Paul's letters and also because it is the most complete development of his gospel (his expression of the good news about Jesus Christ).

Romans has been extremely important in the history of the Christian church. It has repeatedly proved to be a catalyst for reform and renewal of Christian faith and life. People sprinkled throughout history, from Augustine to Luther to Bonhoeffer, have been profoundly influenced by the meaning they have found in Romans.

This fall we will offer a ten week study of the New Testament book of Romans. The two hour class will convene each Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 in portable B. A short video will provide the insight of biblical scholars to set each week's scripture readings into context. We will then explore the material through small group discussion leading to the application of scripture to our own lives of discipleship.

An orientation class will be held on August 29th, to meet each other and distribute study materials, and the last class will be held on October 31st. October 10th is designated as a special question and answer session with our pastor, Reverend Larry Coulter. The class leaders will be Stella Warner and Ron Miller with backup by Sherry Smith and Bob Beardslee.

The participant's book costs $9.00 at SHPC's Bookshelf or Cokesbury (Invitation to Romans by Pamela M. Eisenbaum, ISBN 978- 0-687- 49649-5) or you may order it when you enroll in the class. The materials require about 30 minutes of scripture reading and study each day. If you do not already have a good study Bible in which to underline and make marginal notes, you may also want to purchase one of those. In class, the materials will usually be based on the NRSV translation. Some good NRSV Study Bibles to choose from include The New Interpreter's, The New Oxford Annotated, and the Harper Collins.

You may enroll via email to ronald.miller1333 AT sbcglobal.net or via telephone to 892-1862. Please enroll no later than August 14, 2007. While this will be an in-depth study, no prior Bible study experience is needed to enroll in the class.
